A 47-year-old man has suffered a fall in a difficult area while paragliding in the Sierra 'Risco Amarillo' area, in the municipality of Malagón.As reported to this digital sources from Emergencies 112, the events occurred this Sunday afternoon and, as it was an area that was difficult to access, the Ciudad Real firefighters, Civil Guard, Local Police and the Group of Protection Volunteers Civilians have had quite a bit of trouble completing the rescue. A medical helicopter, a basic life support ambulance, and an emergency doctor have also traveled to the scene of the events.
Once rescued, the affected person was transferred to the Ciudad Real hospital by medical helicopter. The celebration of the Geolodía Industry Email List in the province of Ciudad Real, has allowed us to discover some of the most distinctive features of the 'Volcanes de Calatrava' Geopark project. Ciudad Real' with an outing to the countryside that took participants to visit the Higueruelas elephant cemetery, in Alcolea de Calatrava.
The Geolodía is an outreach initiative in which geological field excursions guided by geologists are carried out free of charge and are open to the public.Every year a Geolodia is held for each province on the first or second weekend of May and they take place in environments of great geological interest, where simple but rigorous information is offered.
In this way, people who participate in this activity can see these places with “geological eyes” and understand how the Earth on which we live and whose natural resources we depend on works. Those who participate also have the opportunity to understand the value of our geological heritage and the need to protect it, as well as learn about initiatives that are being launched to enhance these places, such as the future Calatrava Volcanoes Geopark project: Ciudad Real.
This year's activity has been coordinated by José Luis Gallardo, Saturnino Lorenzo Álvarez and Pedro Rincón Calero, and has had the collaboration of the University of Castilla la Mancha, the Provincial Council of Ciudad Real and the Ciudad Real Museum. The field day focused on learning about the small sub-basin called Alcolea de Calatrava, barely 100 km2, which was filled with Neogene materials, both sediments and various volcanic materials.
During the tour, a review of the long geological history was made, especially in the last stages that are marked by the appearance of the recent volcanism of Campo de Calatrava.Although the most important value, the one that has made this area famous, is the discovery of multiple fossil remains, especially of vertebrates from the Villafranquian that have been found in various points of this basin, among which the site of Las Higueruelas.
The participants in the route have visited this environment and at the last minute have been able to see the permanent exhibition of remains collected from that place, among which the reconstruction of the Anancus arvernensis, a type of mammoth found here and which is in the City Museum, stands out powerfully. Real. But previously, the participants in the Geolodía have also visited the Cerro de la Cruz volcano, which is located north of Alcolea de Calatrava and which was formed by two types of emissions, one mainly pyroclastic that forms the eastern part of the hill and another more effusive that forms the westernmost part and from which a flow started towards what is today the town.
This volcano appears surrounded by other volcanic manifestations, among which the Peñas del Bu and Arzollosa volcanoes and lagoons stand out, to the north, or the La Cabezuela volcano and maar, to the east. The second stop on this route has been Arroyo de los Guedos, where the Las Higueruelas Site is located. There, professors Gallardo, Lorenzo and Rincón have recalled that in some craters created in the Campo de Calatrava by recent volcanism, lacustrine conditions occurred that favored carbonate sedimentation, while fine terrigens were added.
